Winter Hits Utah

Officially, winter is close to two weeks away. But when I look out my front window and spy close to a foot of fresh snow in my yard here in Sandy, Utah, I know that winter is here whether the calendar says so or not.

Yup, during the past 36-48 hours Northern Utah has gotten slammed by a major storm that dumped as much as two to three feet of powder at local resorts.

For example, Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort now has 48 inches at mid-mountain. Alta Ski Resort reports 54 inches at the base, while Deer Valley has a base of 42 inches.

Who knows? Maybe this will be the year our multi-year drought in Utah gets knocked out cold. All I know for sure is that it’s right time to be living where we have “The Greatest Snow on Earth.”

So if you have guests in from out of town, particularly those who have never been to Utah, and you want to show off — take ‘em up Little Cottonwood Canyon to the Aerie Restaurant.

That’s what I did last night as I hosted Dennis and Jeff from Miami, Florida on their first trip to Utah, and the word that I heard over and over during the evening was “spectacular!”

Found on the 10th floor at the top of the Cliff Lodge at Snowbird Ski & Summer Resort, the Aerie is one of the top restaurants in Utah, and not just because it’s situated at more than 7,700 feet elevation.

Voted Utah’s Most Romantic Restaurant and recipient of an Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator Magazine, the Aerie has a very attentive wait staff, a fun nouveau cuisine prepared by Executive Chef Fernando Soberanis (the Beef was excellent), and a fantastic view of the mountains and the canyon through the 15-foot-high floor to ceiling windows. Yes, even in the bathrooms.

It had been some time since I was last up at “the ‘Bird,” but it was definitely worth the 20-minute trip up the canyon.

The Aerie is definitely the tops. I give it a 5 out of 5.
